Step up your makeup game with these tips from experts
Makeup is a powerful outlet for many people.
According to Ashley Laws, licensed cosmetologist and hairstylist at 54 Hair and Spa Co., makeup is a “form of self-expression.”
From serving as a simple way to feel professional, to having fun with unique and flashy colors, makeup can be a fun way to express yourself while trying out different styles and trends.
“Speaking for myself, it just kind of amplifies my confidence and I think it does that for others too — if it’s done in the right way, in a tasteful way,” said Alyssa Jaouni, licensed cosmetologist and esthetician at Magnify Salon.
“There’s all kinds of different looks and techniques you can use to personalize your personality a little bit more. So if you’re a little bit more bold, try a daring lip or something for a special occasion. I think it just helps women feel beautiful,” Jaouni said.
Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next date night or you’re just looking to keep up on current everyday trends, local experts chimed in with their tips and predictions for all things makeup in 2023.
New year, new makeup
Beza believes makeup can “camouflage the things you maybe don’t love about yourself, as well as just enhance areas that you do love.”
While everyone anxiously awaits the springtime sunlight, experts say there’s no reason to wait for summer to play with illuminating, glowy makeup.
“I would say, everybody’s kind of going for a more glowy, more natural look,” Jaouni said.
Ashley Laws, hairstylist and makeup artist at 54 Hair and Spa Co., thought the same.
“Mostly like tinted moisturizers, having more natural-looking eyelashes but of course with enough lift. I see the natural ombre lips,” Laws said. “People aren’t using as much contour and if they do, it’s just a slight blush, slight contour.
“I would just say for people who are interested in getting into makeup to just get a makeup lesson. Reach out to people and experiment. It’s all about finding what you like and what works for you. Because there’s no right or wrong way to do your makeup, it’s all about what you like.”
The less-is-more makeup style appears to be sticking around for a bit longer, especially in the hot summer months.
“Less eye makeup, I think. Like less mascara almost, maybe just a little bit more blush, bronzer and highlight,” Jaouni said.
It’s the perfect, effortless combo to create a glowy summer look that won’t leave your face feeling weighed down in the Missouri heat.
Laws said: “Especially because when the summer months hit, people want to go out and get tan so that probably means people will mostly use a tinted moisturizer.
“I don’t see a lot of makeup being used in the summertime, especially with people going swimming and things like that.”
Laminations and lifts
Not a fan of putting a full face of makeup on every morning, only to wash it all off at night?
Then you might be the perfect fit for brow lamination and lash lifts.
“I think that people are wanting simplicity. They don’t have a lot of time to spend, people are busy and on the go, they want to be able to have a quick and easy makeup routine and still look good and more natural,” said Albani Beza, a cosmetology student and freelance bridal and boudoir makeup artist.
“Lamination is kind of the biggest thing,” Laws said about eyebrows.
According to Jaouni, brow lamination is essentially a relaxer for your coarse eyebrows that have a hard time staying in place. This process makes it easier for products such as brow freeze to hold them in place, making your brows look fuller and fluffier.
“The big, full and fluffy natural brows are very in right now. I could see that this summer with super glowy and dewy natural makeup looks, minimal foundation,” Beza said.
Lash lifts are like a perm for your eyelashes that last for about 4-6 weeks, according to Jaouni.
“You’ll see results that make your lashes appear longer and just help them have a different curl pattern to where they look more open and awake,” Jaouni said.
Laminations and lash lifts can be a great choice for people who are too busy for makeup or who dislike applying lots of makeup daily for the fact that it gives you a finished look without much effort.
“That’s another way of, I think, the ways that the trends are headed; less lash extensions and probably more lash lifts and brow lamination,” Jaouni said.
Added Beza: “I think too with having filters on social media over the last few years, a lot of people find that they enjoy having some kind of makeup on for everyday wear. But being able to create something that they can put into their everyday routine is why I think that the natural makeup has become such a trend.”
Where to start
Feeling overwhelmed with all the ideas?
No matter what step of the process you’re at, there are plenty of resources to get started.
“Everybody is on social media now. I feel like TikTok is a great resource for someone who is just learning the basics,” Jaouni said. “It ranges for people who are learning basics and it goes to the point where you’re advanced and you can find all kinds of different techniques for that too.”
Beza was quick to suggest social media as well, but added a warning.
“I would also say to not get discouraged by what you see on social media and remember that a lot of it is created for entertainment. So just whenever you see different ways that things are being applied, take it into consideration, but you can also make things your own,” Beza said. “It doesn’t need to be as complicated as the next person does, you can turn any look into one of your own.”
Jaouni said you’re also always welcome to schedule a makeup consultation with them.
Makeup consultations are a step-by-step process that will instruct you on the steps that are needed to create a certain look, a great opportunity for beginners or even someone looking to try something new.
Laws said something similar: “I would say get a makeup lesson or just go to somewhere like Ulta that does makeup lessons and go ask questions.”
Just make sure to read the fine print when purchasing a new product. Makeup can hide a lot in the products you put on your skin, so Laws recommends you check the ingredient list before you use a new product to ensure that it’s cruelty-free and good for your skin.
“It just depends. Some of them are really good and some of them aren’t. I have my brands that I tend to stick with. I always know that the ingredients are of quality,” Laws said.
Don’t forget skin health
According to Jaouni, taking better care of your skin has become increasingly popular in the last few years.
Crediting the rise in skincare to TikTok influencers, Jaouni said videos have arisen recently showing hacks for drugstore makeup and their successful results with the inexpensive products.
“Skincare is a big deal right now. Everybody is taking better care of their skin now than what they used to do and that in turn just helps your makeup look and last just so much longer,” Jaouni said.
Jaouni added: “But I also stand behind the professional brands that are tried and true and can see wonderful results either way.”
