    San Diego Comic-Con 2023: Her Universe fashion show celebrates young artists’ cosplay-inspired designs

    A Minnie Mouse-inspired, red-and-white polka dot dress and a flowing, black, pearl-studded ankle-length gown inspired by the X-Men character Storm were the winners of the 2023 Her Universe Fashion Show at Comic-Con International on Thursday, July 20.

    Founder Ashley Eckstein and Broadway actor Michael James Scott hosted the show at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, an “outside-the-con” event. More than two dozen designers showed pop culture and fandom-inspired looks for the opportunity to professionally design for the Her Universe brand for Hot Topic.

    During the show, Eckstein became emotional and admitted to the audience that the show had been in danger of not going forward at all, due in large part to the historic Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strike, which has stopped work from production to promotion, including at Comic-Con.

    Men ‘most certainly are not’ wearing crop tops

    The New York Times published a style piece focused on men wearing “crop tops” made from old t-shirts or purchased from women’s clothing sections.  

    “Though men have been known to wear stomach-baring garments when they exercise or go to the beach, lately crop tops can be seen on guys at stores and bars. More modest styles hit right at a waistline, but many are cropped short enough to expose a navel. Some wearers are making theirs by taking scissors to old T-shirts; others buy them off the rack, often from stores’ women’s sections,” the New York Times style piece reads.

    Parsons School of design’s dean of fashion Ben Barry told the outlet the style was briefly popular in the 1980s.

    Family members speak about Baker County murder

    Ryba Sigers-Whitehead, the sister of David “Daniel” Sigers, remembers her brother as being full of life and always smiling.

    BAKER COUNTY, Fla. — Family members of one of the men killed in an ‘execution style’ double murder in Baker County are reflecting on his legacy.

    David “Daniel” Sigers and James Michael “Bo” Thomas were found dead from gunshot wounds in a home off Sawtooth Road in Macclenny, Florida last year.

    Whalon Joseph Hannah, 19, and Curtis Peyton Austin, 16, have since been indicted on charged related to their deaths.

    Ryba Sigers-Whitehead, the sister of Sigers, remembers her brother as being full of life and always smiling. She says he loved life and enjoyed the simple things like hunting on our family land, planting his garden and watching the wildlife from his front porch.

    Houndstooth suit store opens in Leawood shopping center

    Houndstooth, a men’s clothing store that first opened in the River Market, is bringing its suits and swatches to Leawood.

    The store’s second location, at 4250 W. 119th St., opened quietly in May, but owner Jeff Covitz promised customers he’s planning a grand opening celebration sometime in August.

    Houndstooth sells high-end, ready-to-wear suits and coats as well as custom formal attire. Its suits are made from organic fabrics — wool, cashmere, silk and linen — and price around $600 to $800. Custom two-piece suit prices start at $1,250, and fitting appointments can be made online at houndstoothkc.com.

    In addition to fancier garments, Houndstooth offers more casual shirts and jackets.

    A third-generation tailor, Covitz grew up around hemming and stitching.
